Situation Update

As of Friday, July 10, 2020 1:19 PM PDT

To Our Southern Nevada Veterans, Families, Caregivers and Stakeholders:

The VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System (VASNHS) is one of the first VA sites nationally to expand care following our response to the coronavirus. As such, the North Las Vegas VA Medical Center and VASNHS' community clinics continue to reintroduce in-person health care services and procedures.

The safety of Veterans and staff is our highest priority as we continue to phase in in-person health care and services. VASNHS continues to take into account guidance from various agencies including federal, state and local officials, and balance resources as needed to support the delivery of care and services while responding to COVID-19. As a high reliability organization, safety is always paramount and will continue to guide our decision making.

Below is the current status on access to our facilities, care and services being offered by VASNHS and information on business operations. Scroll down or click on the links below to learn more about a particular item.

ACCESS

To ensure the safety of patients and staff, Veterans coming to a VASNHS facility for an appointment should be aware of the following changes:

Mandatory Screening

Anyone entering VASNHS facilities will be screened. Screening includes answering some health-related questions and taking each person’s temperature. If it is determined an individual is experiencing a health issue that needs to be addressed immediately, they will be escorted to another location for further evaluation. Please enter VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System Facilities no earlier than 15 minutes prior to your appointment and complete screening procedures at the following locations:

North Las Vegas VA Medical Center

NW Entrance (Bldg. 1) 5am-6pm Monday-Saturday
NE Entrance (Bldg. 1) 6am-6pm 7 Days Per Week
Behavioral Health Front Entrance 6am-6pm Monday-Saturday
Building 5 (Physical Rehab & Pain Management) 6am-9pm 7 Days Per Week
Emergency Room Open 24 Hours 7 Days Per Week

Las Vegas Valley, Pahrump and MCPO Jesse Dean VA Clinics
Enter through the main entrance during scheduled hours (See facility information below)

Note: Locations, days and times are subject to change as traffic flow and utilization are continually assessed.

Screening Application: Veterans can expedite their screening process by texting the word SCREEN to 53079. Respondents will receive a text back with a link to answer five screening questions and then upon arrival, can show the results on screen to the screener. Please be patient with our screeners as we work through this new process. Veterans, visitors and vendors should be directed to the public entrances.

Universal Masking

In order to protect Veterans, staff and visitors from potential exposure to COVID-19, VASNHS’ universal masking policy is still in effect. Anyone who enters a VASNHS facility is required to wear a mask or face covering over their nose and mouth at all times.

---

Physical Distancing

Veterans and approved visitors are asked to practice physical distancing in all interactions within VASNHS facilities. Waiting areas have been reconfigured with fewer chairs spaced further apart to support distancing practices in compliance with CDC guidelines.

No-Visitor Policy

Due to COVID-19, a “No Visitor” policy remains in effect, meaning public and outside visitors are not currently permitted to see inpatients at the North Las Vegas VA Medical Center. The only exceptions are in compassionate cases, when Veterans are in their last stages of life and receiving palliative or hospice care. In those cases, visitors will be limited to a specific Veteran’s room only. Additionally, visitors are not permitted to accompany Veterans to outpatient appointments at any of VASNHS' clinics, unless they are directly assisting or caring for a Veteran (i.e. a caregiver providing physical assistance or assisting a Veteran with memory or other cognitive issues). No children under 18 are currently permitted in VASNHS facilities.

CARE AND SERVICES

VASNHS continues to reintroduce in-person care and services at all our locations. Here is the latest information on how to access care:

In-Person and Virtual Care Appointments

While we are offering more face-to-face appointments, VASNHS continues to maximize personalized virtual care as we know these services have been a valuable link to our Veterans during this challenging time. Veterans can access options such as TelehealthMyHealtheVet Secure Messaging or VA Video Connect for their appointments. To request an in-person or virtual care appointment, call 702-791-9024. CLICK HERE for more information local virtual care.

Virtual Same-Day Primary Care, Mental Health Services for Urgent Needs

While VASNHS phases in elective surgeries and non-urgent procedures, and is providing more in-person and virtual appointments, Veterans oftentimes still have questions, issues or medical concerns that cannot wait. As such, VASNHS is delivering same-day services virtually to enrolled Veterans who have urgent primary care or mental health needs.

For Primary Care, patients should reach out to our call center at 702-791-9024 between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday-Friday to request a same-day appointment to discuss their urgent need. They will be referred to a nurse to assess their medical concerns, then, if a patient needs to be seen, we will offer them virtual care through VA Video Connect or by telephone as appropriate.

For Mental Health, if a Veteran has an urgent need, he or she can access virtual same-day services from a health care professional by calling the medical center’s Behavioral Health Clinic at 702-791-9062 between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday-Friday. Veterans will speak with a registered nurse who will assess their needs and assist with medication refills, scheduling any necessary video or phone appointments and completing any consults for immediate care or follow-on services. Access to same-day services doesn’t replace emergency care and Veterans should always call 911 or report to the closest emergency room during a medical emergency. Additionally, if a Veteran is in crisis outside regular business hours, he or she should visit the nearest emergency room or contact the Veterans Crisis Line at 1-800-273-TALK (Option 1) OR Text 838255; OR confidential chat: www.veteranscrisisline.net.

Dental Care

VASNHS’ Dental Service is phasing in limited elective and emergency dental procedures locally for qualified Veterans. Routine exams and cleanings remain on hold. For more information or questions regarding dental services, call 702-791-9019.

Lab and Imaging Services

To alleviate the number of people inside clinics and lab waiting areas, VASNHS is encouraging Veterans with non-fasting labs to visit in the afternoon. Veterans may also make an appointment for their lab draws upon checking out from a VASNHS clinic or by calling 702-791-9024.

For imaging services, Veterans who are not positive or symptomatic for COVID-19 may visit the Northeast, Northwest, Southeast or Southwest VA clinics between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday for general X-ray services. General X-ray services will also continue via walk-in visits from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily (excluding holidays) at the North Las Vegas VA Medical Center.
